The name Aberlour is derived from Gaelic. “Aber” is a Gaelic word which means the mouth of a river, or the meeting place of rivers (in this case the meeting of the River Lour and River Spey).
Aberlour is one of the more attractive and traditional looking distilleries on Speyside, but once you step inside the production areas you may be surprised at how modern the equipment is relative to the old fashioned appearance of the buildings.
Most of Aberlour single malts are double-cask matured in 1st fill Ex-American Oak barrels and Ex-Oloroso Sherry butts.

The first distillery in the village of Aberlour was established in 1825 and ran until 1833, when the co-lessees James and John Grant left to build their own distillery, Glen Grant, in Rothes. The current distillery was the brainchild of James Fleming who built it in 1879 using water from St. Drostan’s Well, named after an early Columban monk, which is situated on the site.
Like many Victorian distilleries, it burnt down and, in 1898, had to be rebuilt. During World War II when the distillery was on short-term working, locals used to smuggle wash up the Aberlour burn and distil illicitly under the Linn Falls.
The distillery became part of Campbell Distillers in 1945, passing into the Pernod Ricard stable in 1974, the year after it had been expanded from two to four stills and wholly modernised internally. Its ownership has long given it a strong following in France. It is now part of Pernod’s whisky division, Chivas Brothers.
At this point Benromach’s core range is:
A natural cask strength Scotch single malt whisky that is matured in 1st Fill Oloroso sherry casks. These Aberlours are Non Age Statement whiskies, So the age is unknown. What we do know is this:
Hand filled bottles from a selection of barrels from warehouse No.1.
A new range of cask strength Scotch single malt whiskies by Aberlour.
But this time Aberlour will use 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon barrels instead of the 1st fill Oloroso Sherry casks.
They will be released in different kind of batches just like its older sister the A’bunadh.
The Casg Annamh series from Aberlour takes its name from the Gaelic for “rare cask”, and a trio of casks are used to create the expressions – European oak sherry casks and two types of American oak cask. The result is brimming with toffee and dried fruit, alongside a generous handful of kitchen spices. This is the fourth batch from the series, delivering yet more Speyside single malt tastiness.
