To craft The Balvenie Tun 1401, Malt Master David Stewart transfers specially selected casks from across the ages to a marrying tun cared for by the distillery’s in-house team of coopers. The contents of these rare casks spent three months ‘getting to know’ one another in marrying tun number 1401, from which this single malt takes its name.
To create Batch No.1 of The Balvenie Tun 1509, David C. Stewart MBE carefully hand-selected 42 of the finest casks – 35 traditional American oak barrels and seven European oak sherry butts – from the distillery’s precious aged whiskies.
All were transferred to Tun 1509, which sits in Warehouse 24, for several months before bottling. This is a rare interpretation of the marrying process and allows all 42 casks to come together to create a unique expression of The Balvenie that’s greater than the sum of its constituent parts.
The Balvenie Tun 1858 was developed by Scotch whisky’s most experienced Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE, who has spent five decades cultivating the craft of whisky making. To create Tun 1858, David selects casks of European oak and American oak from the distillery’s precious aged who all are transferred to Tun 1858, where the whisky is allowed to marry for several months before being bottled at cask strength. This unique marrying process is a rare technique, where the different elements of each mature malt combines to create a whisky of exceptional character. Tun 1858 showcases the rare skills David has acquired during a lifetime dedicated to his craft.
