Tales of The Macallan
The Macallan released in 2021 a series of limited-edition single malts that pay tribute to the key characters in ” The Macallan’s Story” and the contribution they made to their exceptional spirit. Their pioneering legacy is found in their enduring spirit to this day.
Tales of The Macallan Volume II is a remarkable single malt in a remarkable crystal decanter. The liquid, crafted by lead whisky maker Euan Kennedy, is a 1949 vintage that was bottled in 2022 at the peak of maturation. Displaying beautiful tones of bronzed oak and red hues that reflect the Reid surname—meaning, ‘the red one’—it is a rare single malt that possesses a complexity and lingering smokiness, reminiscent of the whiskies of Reid’s time.
The decanter, by none other than Lalique, features etches of Reid by Andrew Davidson, a British artist known for applying wood engravings to traditional print techniques. It also comes concealed within an almanac that narrates Reid’s story through more illustrations by Davidson.

THE ANIMATED LEGACY OF ALEXANDER REID
Tales of The Macallan Volume II pays homage to Alexander Reid, founder of The Macallan. On our 200th anniversary year, this edition depicts Alexander – teacher, farmer and distiller – on his way to the ultimate mastery.
Alexander established the Distillery on Easter Elchies Estate in 1824. Holding firm that small stills gave better flavour and character, he resisted the movement of the time to higher-volume stills. Curiously Small Stills remains one of our Six Pillars – and a feature of our new Distillery.
This is the second edition of the prestigious Tales of The Macallan series: a collection that tells the story of The Macallan pioneers and the defining moments and decisions that have shaped our story. Distilled in 1949 and bottled in 2022, this exemplary whisky has been selected at the apex of its maturation.
Encased in a bespoke, hand-crafted Lalique crystal decanter, the remarkable 1949 vintage whisky honours the journey of The Macallan founder, Alexander Reid, from teacher to farmer and distiller. The decanter showcases etchings of Andrew Davidson’s illustrations, while the accompanying tome features beautifully illustrated chapters by the artist.
