The Flora & Fauna range is a distillery bottling that was introduced by United Distillers in 1991 (now Diageo). Initially only sold at the involvedĀ distilleries, it consist of a number of bottlings of some of the lesser known distilleries in the Diageo portfolio. For many of these distilleries, practically the entire output was used for blended Scotch. The idea behind this collection was to give both fans and distillery staff the opportunity to try these whiskies as Single Malt instead of blended together.Ā Ā
The name “Flora & Fauna“was coined by the late whisky writer Michael Jackson as a reference to the images on the front labels, that depict local animals and plants. Although it was never the official name of the range, the name Flora & Fauna stuck and is today unequivocally used to describe the collection.Ā
The complete collection consist of 26 bottlings with a mid-strength of 43% ABV. There are nine cask strength bottlings in this collection.Ā
The 22 distilleries that where included in this collection are between 1991 and 1994. These distilleries are:Ā
- Aberfeldy
- Aultmore
- Balmenach
- Benrinnes
- Bladnoch
- Blair Athol
- Royal Brackla
- Caol Ila
- Clynelish
- Craigellachie
- Dailuaine
- Dufftown
- Glendullan
- Glenlossie
- Inchgower
- Linkwood
- Mannochmore
- Mortlach
- Pittyvaich
- Rosebank
- Teaninich
- SpeyburnĀ
In 1998 nine Cask Strength bottlings were released with whiskies from:
- Aberfeldy
- Aultmore
- Blair Athol
- Caol Ila
- Clynelish
- Dailuaine
- Linkwood
- Mortlach
- Rosebank
In 2001 four mid strength bottlings with wooden boxesĀ were added to the range:Ā
- Auchroisk
- Glen ElginĀ
- Glen Spey
- Stratmill
Later the wooden boxes where replayed with cardboard boxes and eventually many where sold entirely without boxes.Ā
The cask strength series has since been hard to get your hands on and are highly collectible.Ā
The other bottlings are also become harder to find or are unavailable. This because of closed distilleries (Rosebank and Pittyvaich), some because the distillery had been sold by Diageo ( Aberfeldy, Aultmore, Balmenach, Bladnoch, Royal Brackla, Craigellachie and Speyburn) and others because of they now own a Single Malt range (Caol Ila, Clynelish, Dufftown, Glendullan, Glen Elgin and Mortlach)Ā
This results in that today (2021) only 11 bottlings of different distilleries are still available to purchase outside of the collectors and auctions.Ā
